What is a container free period?
When renting a container, there is a period of free use without having to pay rent, this is the container free period. The length of this period affects your logistics costs. For example, the period between picking up the container from the yard and returning it, if you exceed the free period, you will need to pay an extra fee.
How to extend the free period?
Communicate with your freight forwarder
Towards the end of the free period, you can talk to your freight forwarder and ask them to help you apply to the shipping company for an extension of the free period, which can usually buy you a few extra days.
Use co-operation
If your company has a large volume of cargo and has a long-term cooperation with the shipping company, then you can apply for a longer container-free period, perhaps as long as 14~20 days.
There is one more fee to be aware of! That is demurrage!!!!
What is demurrage?
After the container free period, if the goods are still in the container, you need to pay an extra fee, which is demurrage fee. So, try to complete the loading and unloading of goods and return the container within the container free period.
How to return empty container quickly?
After completing the import customs clearance of the goods, you can directly contact the ship owner to know which yard the container will be returned to. Next, you can contact this yard in advance and let the fleet of the yard send the cargo directly to the yard and empty the container there. In this way, after emptying the cargo, the container is considered to be back to the empty ~
The whole process will be faster than mentioning it to the warehouse first and then sending it back to the yard, which can save you at least two days' time.
