Product Inspection Checklist for Shipping from China to the US
Based on U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data on counterfeit product seizures in FY 2015, the following product categories are the most frequently inspected by U.S. ocean freight:
-
Clothing and Accessories
Clothing and accessories represent the largest category of counterfeit products, making up 22% of all seizures. The profitability of high-end clothing fuels the counterfeit market, driven by consumer demand for luxury apparel.
-
Consumer Electronics
Consumer electronics constitute 18% of counterfeit goods seized, with a total seized value of $13.25 million. The demand for the latest gadgets incentivizes both the production and purchase of counterfeit electronics, making American consumers prime targets.
-
Footwear
Footwear is another significant category, accounting for 10% of seizures. In 2014, 2,818 counterfeit shoes were seized, double the previous year's number. Brands like Nike have implemented hidden details in their shoes to combat counterfeiting.
-
Watches and Jewelry
Watches and jewelry account for 10% of the total seizures, with their value representing 45% of the total value of seized goods. In just one instance last year, 175,000 counterfeit watches were seized. Given their luxury status, these items are frequently counterfeited, prompting ongoing industry efforts to address the issue.
-
Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products
Pharmaceuticals are some of the most counterfeited items globally, making up 8% of seizures. High demand, coupled with limited supply and high prices for quality medicines, makes counterfeit pharmaceuticals highly lucrative for criminals. Drug patent infringement remains a critical focus in the U.S.
-
Handbags and Wallets
The value of seized handbags and wallets represents 15% of the total worth of confiscated goods, with these items accounting for 7% of total seizures. In July last year alone, CPB seized over 10,000 counterfeit Gucci and Coach bags from China.
-
Optical Media
Items such as games, DVDs, and CDs fall into the optical media category, which accounts for 5% of seizures. The total value of these seized goods rose from $1.88 million in 2014 to $3.25 million in 2015. In the digital age, these products are increasingly sold electronically, making them vulnerable to counterfeiting.
-
Computer and Electronic Accessories
Computer and electronic accessories make up 3% of seizures. These counterfeit items pose economic threats and potentially jeopardize U.S. national defense and security, as some counterfeit parts have been found in military equipment.
-
Counterfeit Labels
Counterfeit OEM labels and other labeling materials are seized about 2% of the time. These include cloth labels, stickers, and metal labels used on a variety of counterfeit products including clothing, handbags, shoes, electronics, and software.
-
Children’s Toys and Products
Products intended for children aged 12 and under, and baby items from China, are regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These items undergo stringent inspections at U.S. customs, and incomplete documentation can lead to inspection, detention, or even destruction of the goods.
